How to Prepare Your Child for Photo Day (and Make It a Fun Experience!)
PHOTO DAY is such an exciting time — a chance to capture your child’s bright smile, personality, and the joy of their early years. But we know it can also come with a few worries… will they smile? Will their hair behave? Will their outfit stay clean until it’s their turn? Don’t worry — with a little preparation (and the right mindset), photo day can be smooth, fun, and full of natural smiles.
Here are some simple tips to help you and your little one get ready:
1. Choose comfy, camera-friendly clothes
The best photos happen when children feel comfortable. Choose something they love to wear and that allows them to move freely. Solid colours or soft, simple patterns tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your child’s face. Try to avoid big logos or busy prints, as they can be distracting in photos.
2. Keep it simple on the morning of photo day
A relaxed morning sets the tone for the day. Make sure your child has breakfast (and a quick face and hand wipe afterwards!) before heading to the centre. A quick brush of hair or a little spritz of water to tidy up any flyaways can make a big difference. If your centre allows it, you might even pack a spare shirt or hair accessory — just in case.
3. Talk about photo day in a fun way
Children love to know what’s happening next. Chat about photo day the night before and keep it positive: “Tomorrow you get to show your biggest smile!” or “The photographer is coming to take some fun photos of you!” When kids know it’s something exciting, they arrive with happy energy that shines through in their pictures.
4. Let us know if your child is shy or needs extra time
Every child is different — some can’t wait to jump in front of the camera, while others take a few minutes to warm up. If your child is a little shy, let their educators (or me) know ahead of time. We take a gentle, playful approach to help kids feel comfortable, and we never rush the process.
5. Relax — we’ll take care of the rest!
You’ve done the hard part by getting them ready. Once photo day starts, we focus on capturing their genuine smiles, laughter, and natural personality. Some of the best photos happen in those in-between moments when kids are just being themselves — and that’s exactly what we aim to capture.
